Tracey South and Jayne Winch were pleased to speak at another successful event organised by CILIP for new professionals. We presented two sessions on Hello, is it me you’re looking for? How to maximise your presence and get noticed in a competitive job market.
We gave some hints and tips about how to set yourself up on job boards and LinkedIn to maximise your chances of getting noticed by prospective employers, and how to easily apply for roles online knowing that you have a good profile, CV and cover letter. We gave examples of pitfalls to avoid and ensure you aren’t noticed for the wrong reasons such as describing yourself as a jobsworth or using a profile picture of yourself at a Star Wars convention. We also gave CV and interview advice including avoiding subjective comments with bad grammar and spelling mistakes such as “I am an outstanding entrepreneur with exception atention to dateal!”.
There was some lively debate about the use of LinkedIn for job searching and it was good to see people from different backgrounds and at various stages of their career attending this event. We hope that delegates found our talks interesting and we look forward to attending CILIP’s careers events next year!
