THE OVERLOOKED ‘MEGATREND’? WHERE ARE THE QUANTUM TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH ANALYSTS?

We are seeing a growing demand for Research Analysts that can help educate their fee earners on cross sector issues, specifically how they are being impacted by technologies categorised as ‘mega trends’. What I’m usually being asked about is the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence or Blockchain.

Usually technology Industry Analysts come with a unique appreciation of how technology fits into specific business eco systems in the enterprise or consumer segments for instance. What seems to be missing however is insight into the expected quantum technology revolution.

As such a nascent sector that presents significant challenges and opportunities as the technology matures this cannot be ignored.

Quantum Market Analysts will need to go beyond understanding of the market and eco system and develop a deep understanding of the technology in order to understand what is possible and the implications.

Many sectors have the potential for large scale change such as the following ‘big impact’ sectors:

  • IT security / data privacy (even encrypted data intercepted and stored today is at risk of future decryption with quantum computing).


  • Life sciences – experimentation will fundamentally change, massively shifting the cost base in ways that may make the industry look very different.


  • Oil & gas, quantum sensing technology will have a significant impact in exploration.


I see many AI, IOT and Blockchain Analysts and Evangelists popping up. Are we also growing the next generation of Analyst with deep enough understanding of quantum physics who can help businesses make sense of the expected quantum opportunity along with its risks?

Yesterday I met with the team at Fact Based Insight who are doing some exciting work developing insights in the emerging quantum computing sector. I have not come across any other firms developing strengths in this area and am looking forward to seeing their services develop over the coming year.

Quantum Technology = Quantum Computing + Quantum Simulators + Quantum Cryptography + Quantum Sensing & Imaging.


Quantum Simulators are crudely speaking ‘analogue quantum computers’ and the key thing that they will probably have more commercial impact in the medium term before large scale reliable quantum computers are ready.  Quantum cryptography (and in particular its component QKD) is a response to the threat quantum computers pose to current cyber security.  Quantum sensing and imaging is a remarkable technology in its own right.
