LIBRARIES JOB TITLES, FUTURE LIBRARY SKILLS, SPEED NETWORKING, DIVERSITY IN LIBRARIES & LIBRARIANS VALUES #NLPNCONNECT

Many thanks to the NLPN team for putting together a fantastic event this weekend in Manchester. We were delighted to be able to support industry networking in the North West, particularly with such a welcoming group.

Networking Bingo

The event started with a networking bingo format, this was a great icebreaker and got the whole room talking very early on.

Library Job Titles, Future Library Skills

Following on from this, the CB Resourcing team gave a presentation and workshop on both searching for new jobs as well as the basics on CVs and social media.

  • Don’t assume too much from a job title – try and get the context around a position before you decide whether to apply. We took the group through a number of positions with varied job titles that have been filled by a libraries graduate. Including roles such as Knowledge Analyst, Membership Strategy Analyst, and Learning Resources Assistant.
  • CVs – use the CV to tell your story, go beyond a list of responsibilities and put your skills into the context in which you use them in your role.
  • Digital brand – we had a discussion about the digital tools such as LinkedIn, Twitter etc and telling your story effectively online.
  • We also looked at some teasers from surveys carried out where CB Resourcing asked hiring managers in academic and legal libraries about which skills will be important over the next five years in the libraries sector.

Speed networking

Four library/information professionals (working in HE (research), healthlawschoolsectors) shared their career experiences in a speed networking format. It was a lively discussion with lots of questions from each table.

DILON

The afternoon session began with a brief introduction to the new Diversity in Libraries of the North group. We look forward to hearing more about their work encouraging diversity in the industry. Particularly building a list of speakers for conferences and events from under represented backgrounds.

Peer networking

In order to encourage more interaction between attendees the next part of the day included more networking, this time in the form of peer networking where attendees could suggest topics to start conversations.

Libraries values

We then had an interesting talk and workshop discussion on values in the libraries sector led by Penny Andrews. Penny asked the attendees about their views on values of the profession and started a lively debate in the room.
