Senior Researcher - Brussels, Belgium

A prestigious global law firm with a rare opportunity to join their Brussels office as a Senior Researcher. This role requires strong French and English language skills and good knowledge of EU law.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide high-quality research to support local and global practices (collaborating where appropriate with other teams including Business Development, Marketing, and Knowledge).
  • Support colleagues in monitoring and identifying legislative proposals, relevant issues and decisions on policy agendas including international trade, sanctions, and ESG.
  • Research EU political procedures to keep up to date on relevant EU meetings.
  • Train and onboard lawyers on the basics of legal research and build best practices
  • Use current awareness tools such as Vable to create newsletters and alerts for ongoing monitoring of clients, industries, and events.
  • Participate in evaluating and developing research sources and piloting new services.
  • Ensure continuing professional development and stay abreast of the legal industry.
  • Provide training and mentoring to colleagues in other offices.
  • Triage research requests to offshore team members, where appropriate while focusing on more complex, high-level queries.
  • Work with the procurement team on budgeting and acquisition requests.
  • Provide research content for the Brussels intranet site.
  • Ensure that library and research services are effectively promoted throughout the office
  • Responsible for the general upkeep of the local library space and collection.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience working in a law firm or other professional services firm, or other legal or government setting preferred.
  • Strong up-to-date knowledge of and interest in the current EU Commission, Council and Parliament processes.
  • Specialized knowledge and experience in Brussels office practice areas: Competition, Debt Finance, Disputes, M&A, and Trade.
  • Strong analytical and research skills with the ability to analyze problems logically and methodically and to absorb and synthesize large amounts of information into actionable intelligence.
  • Expert knowledge of key legal and corporate-focused databases and tools is preferred, including Lexis, Westlaw, Kluwer, Capital IQ, and EU legal databases, among others.
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other tools.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with all levels of personnel and to succeed in a team environment.
  • Ability to follow complex instructions with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Time management skills, ability to stay calm under pressure when juggling multiple tasks to meet all stated deadlines.
