Knowledge Assistant - Law Firm - Bristol

A national law firm that has its headquarters in Bristol has a requirement for someone at the beginning of their career to join their large and extremely welcoming Knowledge Management team and assist in the development, implementation and support of their knowledge sharing initiatives and strategy. It's a role that would suit someone that already has some experience or an understanding of knowledge management or someone that can demonstrate the skills required for this profession.

What is Knowledge Management in a legal setting?

Knowledge management is the process of creating, sharing, using, and managing knowledge and information within an organization. Law firms deal with vast amounts of information, including legal research, case files, and client data. Knowledge management can help organize and streamline this information, making it easier and faster for lawyers to access the information they need.

Knowledge Management is key in facilitating collaboration: Law firms are often large organizations with multiple offices and practice groups. Knowledge management systems can help facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing among lawyers and staff

The key responsibilities and objectives specific to this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist staff in exploiting Knowledge Centre resources and assist in organising training in the use of electronic resources
  • Helping to circulate industry updates and news in the form of current awareness bulletins
  • Assist with the maintenance of precedents, know-how pages and matter management
  • Support tools and systems that assist in knowledge management such as the intranet, databases and directories
  • Knowledge Centre administration such as monitoring of new matters on the Intranet and maintenance of the Knowledge manual

Why choose a career in Knowledge Management?

Knowledge Management is a very niche function within legal and professional services settings. While not exclusive to extremely large and complex firms, it's typically this profile of firm in which there is an almost constant demand for this skill set. For someone with some experience or a genuine interest in working in a legal setting, this would be a great choice if you are looking for an alternative to a fee earning career.

What are the requirements for this role?

  • Ideally, you'll have some experience in the administrative function of a law firm, corporate setting or even a library
  • You'll need to be savvy with IT systems and databases and a quick learner in this respect. If you've worked with an intranet or understand how they are structured, that would be extremely beneficial
  • You'll need first class customer facing skills, in particular working with people who can be a little demanding!
  • You'll need great interpersonal skills and enjoy the challenge of working with different teams or acting as a conduit between stakeholders
  • Being organised, attentive to small details and able to work out priorities will be something that comes naturally to you
