Archivist - South East London - 14 hours per week, temporary contract until end of March 2026

We are recruiting for a reputable organisation dedicated to preserving cultural and historical collections. This organisation requires an experienced Archivist to manage and develop their archives, providing essential expertise to support access, preservation, and engagement with their collections.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and develop the archive service, ensuring all collections are managed and cared for to high standards.
  • Facilitate access to archives for specialists, enquirers, and staff, supervising visitors when necessary.
  • Respond to public enquiries related to the archives and history, enhancing public engagement.
  • Manage the image request service, supporting research, learning, and public programmes.
  • Ingest archival material, managing transfers and acquisitions, and repackaging items to preservation standards.
  • Ensure comprehensive, standards-compliant computerised cataloguing at series and item levels.
  • Digitise archive materials on demand, supporting digital access initiatives.
  • Support ongoing institutional records management, including audits and development of procedures.
  • Assist volunteers with cataloguing and digitisation projects, maintaining effective volunteer support.
  • Contribute to policy development, ensuring consistent and effective application of archive management standards.
  • Support potential projects, including bids related to archives and collections.
  • Follow health and safety guidelines, including manual handling of objects.

Qualifications & Skills Required:

  • Graduate qualification in Library and Information Science, Records Management, Archives, or equivalent experience.
  • Practical experience of online archival cataloguing using international standards, such as ISAD-G.
  • Experience managing an archival collection and service, with a response to diverse user needs.
  • Knowledge and experience working with a Retention Schedule and records in a museum or cultural setting.
  • Willingness to undertake manual handling of objects and supporting health and safety practices.
