Tracey South and Jayne Winch delivered a workshop at CILIP HQ for their annual New Professionals Day on 25th October 2017.

Our session this year was "Who do you think you are? Looking beyond the job title". We discussed the wide range of job titles used for library and information related roles, and that it isn't always obvious what they mean and what the employer is actually looking for. We looked at some of the key information skills and gave some tips for interpreting job titles and job descriptions.

We ran an interactive session where groups looked at a range of job descriptions for vacancies CB Resourcing has recently worked on, to discuss the key requirements and what sort of person the employer was looking for. Then we discussed what the clients were actually looking for along with the skills and experience of the successful candidate. It isn't always obvious! Therefore, our advice was if you like the look of a job and can demonstrate evidence of meeting enough of their requirements, then why not apply?

We hope the delegates found it useful and took away some useful pointers for future job searching.  Looking forward to the next CILIP event!
